Journeying the World and Life Together

Better late than never.  One of my co-workers emailed this blog to me while I was out of the office.  As I am a HUGE advocate for customer service, I had to share this with you.

This post is from the blog This Is My Yacht by Eric Goldring.  He posted this on April 3rd right after there was a fire on board the Azamara Quest.

Over the past months I have been on a bit of a roll complaining about how cruise lines, even luxury lines, have treated its passengers (who used to be treated as “guests”) looking at their immediate bottom line rather than the long term one.

Royal Caribbean brands seem to consistently step up and do the right thing…and it pays off not only with the effected passengers, but the cruising public and, importantly, travel agents.  I wrote about a less drastic event in October 2010 involving the Celebrity Century (Ship Happens) noting Celebrity Cruises (a Royal Caribbean brand) was taking better care of its passengers than Regent Seven Seas was when the Regent Voyager became disabled.

Earlier this year, Seabourn cancelled one of its summer Mediterreanean cruises…one that many guests had as a part of a longer cruise…and rather than, as in the past, offering them a complimentary cruise offered their passengers (formerly known as “guests”) a modest discount on a future cruise. And, by the way, I do not recall Seabourn ever having previously cancelled a peak season cruise for a charter because long term loyalty is just too dear.  (You know I didn’t keep my mouth shut on that one!)

OK, with that preface…

As you may know, the Azamara Quest had a fire in its engine room this past week resulting in a fire that, although extinguished within an hour, disabled the ship temporarily (and, while no passengers were injured, there were a few crew members hurt, one seriously).

The ship eventually had one generator started (providing running water, lights and circulating air, among other services) and then one engine was able to be started allowing the ship to motor, slowly, to Sandakan, Malaysia where she now is undergoing assessment and repairs.

So what has Azamara Club Cruises done for its “guests” (no, they have not been treated as mere “passengers”!):

  • Since the cruise was to end in Singapore on April 12, 2012, they were given the immediate option of either temporarily staying onboard until Tuesday or moving to a hotel at Azamara’s expense.
  • Each guest is being given $150 to cover onshore incidentals and meals
  • On Tuesday (today) Azamara is providing a charter flight to Singapore
  • Once in Singapore the guests are being given the option of
    • staying in a luxury hotel in Singapore for as long as they wish, up until the scheduled end of the cruise (April 12th) at Azamara’s expense or
    • taking the rest of their holiday somewhere else (airfare, hotel, etc. paid by Azamara)
    • A $150 per day stipend for meals and incidentals
  • The full cruise fare is being refunded
  • Up to $500 in airline change fees are being refunded
  • A Future Cruise Credit equal to the amount they paid for this cruise is also being provided.

The way I calculate it, there is about $5,000 in direct holiday value given to each guest, plus a refund of the cruise fare, pluse airline change fees plus a complimentary cruise, so call it about $10,000 per guest in total “value”.  (That does not mean it will be that much in Azamara out-of-pocket expenses as they surely have negotiated rates with hotels and have insurance or reserves for these sorts of highly unusual events.)

But – and this is important – imagine the cost of the “black eye” if Azamara Club Cruises hadn’t done right by its guests….not only with its passengers, but the cruising public and, to be sure, the top travel agents.

Oh, and by the way, Azamara Club has been excellent in keeping the public informed of what has been going on.  Posts on its website, posts on its Facebook page and, of course, direct contact with the media.  Open and as transparent as reasonably possible.

All of this, to my mind, creates confidence in a brand when intuitively one would think the opposite.

Now, think about this:

I have been proponent of Azamara Club Cruises because of its service levels, very interesting itineraries, fairly inclusive nature (included gratuities, soft drinks, water and coffees, wines with meals, etc.) and cuisine.  While it standard cabins are small, once you get to the suite level things are more than adequate for a near luxury experience.

But most have been pretty resistant to my suggestions of Azamara Club offerings.  One of my clients – who just booked another luxury cruise with Goldring Travel – recently recalled her Azamara Club cruise as “an amazing time“.

With a cruise line that shows it values you as much as Azamara Club Cruises just has during this recent unfortunate episode, don’t you think that you just might want to put in on your radar?  It has been on mine!

I admit it and I proudly embrace it.  I’m a sucker for some great food.  So for today, I’m just going to put pictures (and caption as many as I remember) of the food we ate at Azul Beach!

One of Danny’s major concerns when we decided to do a Destination Wedding was that he had never been to any of these places.  How could he blindly make a decision about where to host the most important day of his life?  So I did what I always tell my brides to do.  Find out if the hotels you are considering offer some kind of Wedding Preview program.  Most of the all-inclusive hotels which specialize in weddings will offer one.  Your best bet is to book it through your travel agent (or me of course!)  A Wedding Preview is where you can go and see the wedding sites, and get a feel for the resort in general.  So we jetted off to Mexico.

Basically my goal was to force myself to sit down and really think about the details of my wedding weekend.  For example I figured out that even though I picked the perfect property for us to get married… at night it’s a little TOO peaceful.  So one night we are going to set up an excursion to Playa del Carmen for some excitement.  We looked at colors, thought about DJ options, checked out reception locations, did a test photo shoot with the photographer that the hotel recommends (This was my biggest concern.  I have been so afraid that the pictures would not be what I wanted and I would lose an important moment of our day), tasted food, and spoke with the wedding coordinators on property.  All in all, even though I personally had already made my choice for the location, it gave Danny the opportunity to feel just as comfortable.

During our stay we were fortunate enough to see multiple weddings set ups.  Each was different from the last.  Surprisingly, one of my favorites was a brunch set up after a morning wedding.  The colors and simplicity of it were wonderful.  They did a brunch on the terrace of the main restaurant overlooking the water.

I love this for its simplicity!

If you are considering a Destination Wedding…if you have hesitations, concerns, or overall questions… I completely recommend contacting your travel agent (or me!) and setting up a preview of your hotel to make sure that you are making the right decision for you and your fiance!

It's almost Wedding Wednesday and when I saw this I just couldn't resist. Don't worry. There will be a Wedding Wednesday too!

Danny and I landed last night.  Our plane hit the ground at 8:15pm and I could already hop a plane back to Mexico.  It’s not necessarily Mexico itself that we miss, but the hotels that we stayed in.  Azul Beach and Azul Sensatori are both incredible 4-4.5 star hotels in Riviera Maya.  Each was great for its own reason.

Azul Beach. It’s a small (148 rooms and suites) property geared towards families with little children and weddings.  Are you wondering how those two things work together?

I simply love the lobby, it just gives me some zen!

Kids:  Seriously, we were there for three nights and only heard one child cry the whole time.  This is something we commented on over and over again.  You see the kids, so you know they are there.  There are high chairs and toys at all of the restaurants, and a great kids program room, so you know they are there.  But seriously, no tears or screaming?  Yup.  I’m not going to say that they never have kids melt down there, but this was a great place to go if you are trying to convince someone that they want to be a Mommy or Daddy!

iPhone quality photo of one of the wedding locations on the beach. I just realized I forgot my camera at home!

Weddings:  There were two weddings a day while we were there.  Two is the maximum number of weddings a day at Azul Beach.  They aren’t a wedding factory or anything, but when you have a property as beautiful and a location as prime as this (with great pricing) it’s hard for brides to resist!  They have a location on the beach where they set up the wedding structure and decorate it as the bride and groom wish.  Also there is a sky wedding (this is where I am getting married) which is on top of the new lobby (three-story building) and boasts an unbelievable view of the ocean… and no sand on the feet!

Azul Sensatori.  Sadly we only had one night here, but I did have some great experiences.  Reasons I would go to this resort?  Families with kids of all ages.  The babies are still better off at Azul Beach, but everything over baby age…Sensatori has something for everyone.  The dining.  While we weren’t impressed by Spoon, which is their main restaurant (we went for breakfast), the rest of the food we ate was very good.  Tappaz was great for dinner.  There is no menu, they just bring you plates.  If you have any food restrictions, you tell them at the beginning and they take good care of you.  The pools at Sensatori are great.  It’s also way more lively than Azul Beach.

I have so much to say that I’m going to blog about these two hotels for the whole week with pictures from our trip and little insights that we have.  Stay Tuned!

And I am off again!

Hey friends and followers! I am on the way to Miami International Airport (don’t worry Danny is driving) to fly over to Mexico. We are spending an almost completely relaxing long weekend at the hotel where in 7 months we will be saying our wedding vows! Super exciting!!!

I am not sure if I will be blogging from Mexico, but just in case I wanted to say “see ya” in a couple of days! Hopefully I will be coming back with lots of information about the Azul Beach hotel and Azul Sensatori hotel. And great pictures!

Have a great couple of days!!

Did April sneak up on anyone else?  It feels like I blinked and it was April 15th.  And then it was April 16th at midnight and I was getting home from some girl-time a dear friend to start helping Danny do his taxes.  Luckily he had everything ready because we were done by 1:30am.  Otherwise I’d probably feel even more like I need a week of sleep than I actually do!  So today is now officially Tax Relief Tuesday on Sojourn With Stacey because I need a mental vacation.  Enjoy the mini-mental vacation!

I received this from a co-worker yesterday and you simply HAVE to see it. This is exactly what I look for in the service that my clients receive on their vacations!
